Gas Fitting on the Gold Coast: What Work Requires a Licensed Tradesperson?

Most people know you need a licensed electrician for electrical work — but far fewer realise the same applies to gas. In Queensland, gas fitting is a licensed trade, and carrying out unlicensed gas work is illegal, dangerous, and can void your home insurance.

Here's what counts as licensed gas work on the Gold Coast, and why it matters. What is gas fitting? Gas fitting covers any work involving the installation, maintenance, repair, or disconnection of gas appliances and pipework. This includes natural gas and LPG systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. What work requires a licensed gas fitter? Under Queensland regulations, a licensed gas fitter must carry out: Installation of gas appliances — including cooktops, ovens, BBQs, hot water systems, and heaters Connection or disconnection of any gas appliance to a gas supply Installation, alteration, or repair of gas pipework Pressure testing and commissioning of new gas installations Relocation of gas meters or isolation valves Installation of gas bayonet fittings Even swapping out a like-for-like appliance requires a licensed tradesperson if it involves connecting to the gas supply. What can a homeowner do themselves? Very little. In Queensland, you can disconnect a portable LPG appliance (such as a camping stove with a screw-top cylinder) without a licence. Everything else — any work involving fixed gas lines or built-in appliances — must be done by a licensed gas fitter. Why it matters for Gold Coast homeowners and property managers Gas leaks are serious. Beyond the immediate safety risk, unlicensed gas work can invalidate your home and contents insurance, put you in breach of your landlord obligations, and leave you personally liable in the event of an incident. For property managers, ensuring gas appliances in your rental portfolio are installed and maintained by licensed tradespeople isn't optional — it's part of your duty of care to tenants. Adamson Electrical holds a gas fitting licence Unlike most electrical contractors, Adamson Electrical holds gas fitting licences alongside our electrical and refrigeration licences.
